Dr. Wirth Answers Some Frequently Asked Dentistry Questions
There’s a lot to consider when choosing a dentist. You want to find someone who’s caring, compassionate, and experienced — and all of which delivered in a safe and gentle environment.
At Whidbey Dental Associates, Dr. Wirth and our staff have collected some questions and answers to highlight the importance of effective dental care. If you have further questions, don’t hesitate to contact our office. A member of our friendly staff can help!
Hard or medium bristles can damage your teeth and gums, so we recommend choosing a toothbrush with soft or extra soft bristles. Also, Dr. Wirth doesn’t have a preference for electric or manual toothbrushes, as long as you clean the surfaces of each tooth to completion. Replace your toothbrush after 3-4 months of use.
In terms of toothpaste, the goal is to remove and prevent the growth of bacteria. If you’re nervous about which to choose, try one with the ADA’s (American Dental Association) Seal of Acceptance — these will always contain fluoride which protects and strengthens teeth.
Yes. Flossing clears food debris and plaque from between the teeth and under the gumline. Any plaque not cleared will turn to tartar, creating gaps between the teeth and gums which eventually loosens teeth.
If you’re struggling to floss, we suggest nylon-coated floss because it’s designed to glide against the gums and teeth without damaging them.
Mouthwash is an exceptional (and necessary) addition to any oral care regimen. It protects your teeth from cavities, sensitivity, and bad breath. If you suffer from dry mouth, you can use an alcohol-free mouthwash. Also, if your child is under six-years-old, they shouldn’t use these products.
Routine visits to Whidbey Dental Associates aren’t just for fun — it’s Dr. Wirth’s time to check on your smile. Regular visits help him identify dental issues early so we can treat them before they get out of hand. Check out our routine cleanings and exams.
